This rehabilitation period is intended for families in which the parents’ substance abuse causes problems and into whose life the child protection authorities have had to intervene. The period also applies to families for whom the A clinic recommends family rehabilitation.
The objective of the rehabilitation is to survey the family’s situation and its substance addiction. Setting the goals of rehabilitation as well as activities in pursuit of them takes place in cooperation with out-patient care. The objective in the rehabilitation is to support families in finding new substance-free modes of behaviour that enable a secure upbringing environment for the children and increase the families’ functional capacity. During the period, an attempt is made to explore the family’s resources for coping as a basis for further child protection measures.
In the rehabilitation the families form their own community, which acts according to the principles of community-based rehabilitation. Accommodation is in well equipped three room + kitchen terraced homes, which have a sauna and washing cabin shared by four families.
The rehabilitation includes family sessions in which a work pair discusses with the family those issues that concern the goals set for the family. In addition to this, theme groups are arranged for adults and children, and, according to the families’ need, other rehabilitative activities are arranged, such as relaxation, acupuncture, creative activities and supervised food preparation and housekeeping.
The community also participates in the manor’s joint events. The rehabilitation also includes network meetings and discussions in which the content of the rehabilitation period and follow-up rehabilitation are planned together with out-patient care substance-abuse and child protection workers. The aim is to hold initial, interim and final discussions. An interim assessment is made for the families at the mid-point of the rehabilitation period and its purpose is for the family and the work group to assess together the fulfilment of the objectives between. At the end of rehabilitation, a rehabilitation summary is prepared for each family, which is sent to both the family and to the out-patient care worker.
An important task of the rehabilitation period is to support parenthood and interaction between parent and child. A tool employed in this is, among other things, the theraplay method, which is used to develop effective parent-child interaction, promote attachment and strengthen healthy self-esteem in the child as well as commitment and confidence in social relationships.
Throughout the entire rehabilitation period, the emphasis is on highlighting the child’s perspective in particular.
One important rehabilitative factor in family rehabilitation is considered to be the establishment of a daily and weekly routine for the family and the smooth running of everyday activities. The family is supported with independent home and child care.
